Tips on Rescuing Trapped Passengers in Elevator / Lift

Safety Tips:

1. Trapped passenger inside the elevator car presses the emergency alarm button.

2. On hearing the alarm, the rescue person or the people waiting to get in the lift will inform the rescue person.

3. The rescue person alerts the trapped passengers that the rescue operation is ON and ask them to remain calm as they are safe.

4. The rescue person then proceeds to the machine room., where he SWITCHES OFF THE MAIN FIRST.

5. He then releases the brake to start manual hand winding operations.

6. The hand-wheel is rotated to drive the elevator car manually ( The rescue person checks which direction is easier to hand-wind the lift. If the car is heavier , an assistant can help him).

7. Releasing of brake is stopped once the rescue person finds the floor marking ( paint marking on the hoist ropes) matches with the bed plate level.

8. Rescue person then climbs down to the floor at which the elevator has stopped in for hand-winding operation, opens the door with the door key and asks the passengers to come out of the elevator.

9. Then he closes the lift door, SWITCHES ON THE MAINS SWITCH and wait for the power supply, so that the lift will be back in normal operation.

1. Press the call button gently.

2. Always watch your step when you enter and exit an elevator.

3. Keep a safe distance from the elevator car door.

5. Hold children by hand and make sure pets are kept on a short enough leash.

6. In unforeseen circumstances like power failure, if elevator gets stuck between the floors, do not panic, press the alarm button and wait assistance.

Don'ts:-

1. Don't stand in the way of exiting passengers.

2. Don't try to open the door until the elevator has stopped fully.

3. Don't overload an elevator as it is specifically designed to carry only certain number of passengers, safely and comfortably.

4. Never wedge an object, or any part of your body in the path of a closing elevator car door.

5. Never allow children to play in and around an elevator.

6. Elevator should not be used in case of fire

1. Educate children about Do's and Don'ts.

2. Do not allow the children to play in and around the elevator.

3. Do not allow the children to put their fingers/hand/foot in between the car and landing collapsible gate.

4. Hold children firmly when the elevator is in motion.

5. Educate children to be away from doors.

6. Do not allow the children to lean or bang against the door.

7. Do not allow the children to play with light curtain (door safety) and emergency alarm.

8. Discourage travel of children alone in elevators, in which automatic rescue device is not provided.

Pet Safety:-

1. Hold the pets firmly while traveling in elevators.

2. Do not leave the chain of pets loose on the floor.

3. Ensure the pets do not stroll inside the elevator while in motion.

1. Stay calm and don't panic:

• Be calm and thereis no need to panic. Feeling panic and impatience can lead to an accident.

• Emergency lighting:- car lighting runs on a separate circuit. even if power fails , emergency light ( with battery backup will be available up-to 30 minutes.

• Ventilation: There is plenty of air in the car and you will not feel suffocated.

2. Communication to outside world:

• Raise your voice for help and do not hit / bang the elevator doors / panels. Every elevator will have an emergence alarm button. In some elevators, intercom or telephone facilities are also available. Press the alarm button and wait for the rescue personnel to help you.

3. Be Patient:

• Be patient and wait until trained rescue team come to your aid. fell comfortable till rescue team opens the door for you to come out safely.

• Never try to open elevators door forcefully. This is extremely risky and can lead to disastrous consequences including loss of life.

4. Rescues is ON:

• Don't come out of the elevator when rescue operation is ON. The elevator may suddenly move resulting in fatal accidents. Be patient till the elevator is brought to the nearest floor by rescue personnel.
